LensStreet.com is an ecommerce portal that retails contact
lenses and sunglasses online. According to the company, LensStreet houses contact
lenses of all leading brands such as Johnson & Johnson, Bausch & Lomb,
Ciba Vision, as well as lens care accessories such as lens cases and solutions.
Launched in July 2011 by Chetan Unadkat and Sheetal Bahl, LensStreet has grown to a team of ten, and has expanded its store offerings to include sunglasses, with plans to launch the sale of spectacles within a short span of time. “Spectacles are much more complex, and we want to launch them with the right technologies so that it's actually comfortable for customers to buy. It's on the cards,” said Chetan Unadkat, founder, LensStreet.com.
According to the founders, eyewear e-retail is a well established model in the west, and it was a question of time before it took off in India. “LensStreet's USP is Medical approach to eyewear, which is how it should be. We are not treating this as a general retail play, and have the support of the opthalmological community (including an advisory board) for this venture,” added Sheetal Bahl.
The company plans to Expand into all aspects of eyewear, with the objective of becoming the go-to place for all matters related to vision. LensStreet competes with Valyoo Technologies run LensKart.com, which, in October 2011, had raised $4 million in the first round of funding from IDG Ventures India. Meanwhile, GKB Opticals, a chain of eyewear retail stores, has also entered the ecommerce segment by launching GKBOptical.com.
